Sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3), the body's own cleansing substance!

The most important constituents (buffers) of blood that keep the pH value within the limits of 6.8 and 7.8 are formed by sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3) and carbonic acid (H2CO3). When the proportion of carbonic acid increases through, for example, physical exercise the blood will become acidic. If that happens, we automatically start to breathe more deeply to get rid of more carbon dioxide (CO2) through the lungs and to become less acidic. When acidification continues the alkaline buffer, formed by sodium bicarbonate, ensures that the acid in the blood is neutralized.

In other words, sodium bicarbonate looks after the regulation of body pH. It protects the body and is produced by, for example:

- pancreas
- stomach wall
- wall of the intestine
- kidneys

However, if the body no longer has the proper capacity to produce sufficient bicarbonate to neutralize acid waste, the following mechanism comes into force; liquid acidic waste is converted to solid acid and as such stored in the body. The accumulation of solidified acidic waste or slags, such as uric acid crystals, cholesterol, fatty acids etc. (the actual acidification of the body) can eventually lead to a good deal of chronic metabolic disorders.

Loss of bicarbonate buffers after the age of 40!

There has already been a good deal of research into the relationship between sodium bicarbonate and acidification of the body. A significant study examined how the bicarbonate capacity of the body relates to the increased age of a person.

Bicarbonate buffers - decline - progressing age

*Frassetto, Lynda en Sebastian, Anthony – Age and Systematic Acid-Base Equilibrium: Analysis of Published Data, Journal of Gerontology: BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES, 1996, Vol. 51A. No1, B91-B99

The above graph is from a research study conducted by Dr Lynda Frassetto* and describes the relationship between the blood plasma bicarbonate (HCO3-) density and the age in years of the persons surveyed. It shows clearly that the bicarbonate level in the blood remains constant until the age of 40, after which the bicarbonate level decreases substantially.

The findings of this study show that the bicarbonate buffers are maintained reasonably well up to the age of 40 but after that, these bicarbonate buffers are increasingly less present to neutralize acid in the body and to get rid of it. It is not difficult to understand that our Western lifestyle (unhealthy diet with a lot of salt and sugar, stress etc.) is asking a great deal from our bicarbonate buffers, causing the level of bicarbonate in the body to decrease even long before the age of 40.

Taking sodium bicarbonate tablets or solutions is bad for the body!

Because it has been recognized that sodium bicarbonate is essential in deacidifying the body, it is often suggested that sodium bicarbonate powder is dissolved in water and then drunk. Sodium bicarbonate is also sold as tablets (often on prescription) to prevent any acidification. These methods, which try to increase the bicarbonate buffers in the body, are to be strongly discouragedbecause they can lead to other complaints. Stomach acid converts the dissolved sodium bicarbonate into water (H2O), salt (NaCL) and carbon dioxide (CO2). Side effects of taking sodium bicarbonate in this way include diarrhoea due to the production of substantial levels of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the stomach. Blood pressure can also rise very quickly due to the production of salt (NaCL). And finally, the important relationship of the minerals sodium/potassium gets severely disrupted. This proportion needs to be 1:3 to maintain the balance between fluid in the body cells and between the fluid between the body cells (intra and extracellular water balance).

How to increase the bicarbonate buffers in the body in a safe and effective way

As we have seen it is very important to have sufficient sodium bicarbonate present in the body to enable the body to regulate the pH value effectively. So, is there a method to reincrease the bicarbonate buffers in a safe way?

Yes, there are 2 methods in which this can be done safely and effectively on a continuous basis:

1) by drinking alkaline water: Alkaline water is water with a high pH value and can be made with AlkaLife PH drops. By adding 3 drops of AlkaLife you increase the pH of your ordinary drinking water to 9. By drinking alkaline water, sodium bicarbonate is produced via the stomach wall and is absorbed directly into the bloodstream.

2) by taking sodium bicarbonate tablets which pass through the stomach intact and dissolve in the intestine, not before, and which contain the correct 1:3 proportion of sodium/potassium. After the tablets have gradually dissolved, the sodium bicarbonate is absorbed into the bloodstream via the wall of the intestine.

AlkaLife products are designed to make alkaline water in a safe way and to allow the body to absorb the sodium bicarbonate directly. A very effective way to deacidify the body and to combat chronic disorders.
